Student Spotlight: Melissa Scarani

Meet one of our newest Certified Members, Melissa Scarani.

Melissa Scarani, FGA, GG, Member AGA has over 20-years’ of gemological experience and is the owner and co-operator of Gemology Resources, a gemological laboratory, located in Houston Texas, specializing in appraisals, colored stone and diamond reports. Growing up, her passion for minerals pushed her to enroll in the GIA graduate gemologist program at the age of 18 where she decided to dedicate her career to the study of gems.

While working for top credentialed retail jewelers belonging to the American Gem Society (AGS), Melissa gained first-hand experience with world-famous brands like Rolex, Breitling, David Yurman, David Webb, and many others. She also worked with fine antique jewelry for more than a decade, becoming knowledgeable about the different periods of jewelry and brands such as Tiffany, Mauboussin, Boucheron, Giuliano, Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, Buccellati, et al.

Melissa's passion for gems drives her to continuously seek new knowledge. Although she was already a (GIA) Graduate Gemologist, she expanded her expertise by earning the FGA title from the Gemological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A). As a result of her travels abroad, in particular her visits to mines in Thailand and Vietnam, she has gained even practical skills about gems and their origins and treatment.

Where others may capture the outer beauty of gemstones, Melissa dives into the very heart of them. She first began to explore the world of gemology photomicrography when she acquired her first Photo Atlas. Immersing herself in the new universe that Gubelin and Koivula displayed with their incredible images made her appreciate the essence of mother nature's miracles in the world of inclusions. Her award-winning images depict the rare and wondrous microscopic beauty within fine gems. Melissa’s passion for inclusions is due to the stories that the gemstones can share ... and every gemstone has a story to tell.
